Meet Eric Horstmann-Panke
Eric Horstmann-PankeOn the coldest winter days, you are likely to find Eric Horstmann-Panke at Jiminy Peak Mountain, eagerly preparing to conquer one of its many challenging trails. Not even below-zero wind chill could keep this ski enthusiast away. Eric loves to ski both downhill as well as cross country. An avid outdoorsman, Eric also enjoys going for long walks at local parks and college campuses, hiking and swimming.

Eric lives in Schenectady ARC’s Matricardi House, where he has been a resident since the home’s opening in July 1994. The new home was opened at a time of great need for Eric and his family, as his previous residence was no longer going to serve individuals with developmental disabilities. Eric and his family endured months of despair and uncertainty before being referred to Schenectady ARC.

Together, Eric’s family and Schenectady ARC made every effort to identify a residential opportunity that would meet Eric’s needs as well as the needs of other teens in similar circumstances. Leaving no stone unturned, Schenectady ARC and the Horstmann-Pankes worked tirelessly with local legislators and went through numerous legal trials before getting the green light to open a new residence.

Eric’s parents wanted Eric to have the care he needed as well as the opportunity to gain the independence that would allow him to grow and continue to develop himself. Eric’s current home has done just that; 12 years later, his parents are thrilled with the results. Eric has his own room and shares his home with a friend he attended school with.

Should you walk into his house on any given day, you might find Eric dancing around his living room to the radio station FLY 92 FM or one of his other favorite stations. He also enjoys relaxing in the backyard, going out for burgers, traveling and volunteering. A longtime volunteer for “Meals on Wheels,” Eric enjoys giving back to the community and looks forward to his daily commitment to the program.

In addition to residential services, Eric receives service coordination, clinical and transportation services.
