Employer Highlight – Schenectady ARC

Traditionally, this feature highlights employers within the community who have partnered with Schenectady ARC to provide employment opportunities. Some businesses provide work to our 130+ workforce at Pine Ridge Industries, while others hire individuals or small groups to work at their site. It gives us great satisfaction to coordinate these employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities; however it is an even greater reward to fill a position within our own agency with an individual we serve.
Meet John Grogan. John has been receiving services from Schenectady ARC for nearly 10 years. He entered the agency looking to identify employment opportunities and quickly achieved success. John held various positions at several local companies before pursuing a full time position as a custodian at Schenectady ARC. For the last eight years, John has been keeping Pine Ridge Industries clean. With more than 150 staff and consumers arriving daily, that is no small task; but John enjoys his job and looks forward to coming to work. “This is the best job that I have ever had! I have been here a long time and love working here.”
John takes the bus to work, but often rides his bike – a 40 minute trip, but one he enjoys. He spends his paycheck on his rent, cell phone bill as well as his hobbies; that include fishing, biking, go-carting and listening to music. Cindy Dambrocia, Director of Rehabilitation Services has worked with John for many years and can’t compliment him enough, “John is such a wonderful employee and person and we are all so proud of the great job he does here.”

Located in Cohoes, NY, Mohawk Fine Papers is one of North America’s leading producers of premium printing papers as well as a supplier to paper merchants worldwide. In business for over 75 years, Mohawk is lead by a third generation of the O’Connor family. The company mills were the first paper mills in the U.S. to use wind energy in the manufacture of paper and now receives 100% of its electricity from renewable wind power.
As a customer of Pine Ridge Industries, Schenectady ARC’s workshop specializing in contract packaging, assembly and light manufacturing, Mohawk Fine Papers has provided employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities since August of 2000. On any given day you will find 30-50 individuals working on a job for Mohawk. The O’Connor family’s support has created an ideal working partnership, recognizing the potential of individuals with disabilities in the workplace and was named Customer of the Year by Schenectady ARC in 2002. Greg Winnie, Director of Manufacturing Operations for Pine Ridge Industries is thrilled with the commitment that Mohawk has made, "Mohawk has been great to work with. Over the last seven years they have increased their business with Pine Ridge tremendously. When they first became a customer they made up 5% of our overall work and today they make up 50%. I can’t say enough what a pleasure it is to work with them."
Mohawk Fine Papers relies on Pine Ridge to perform a variety of collating, sample kit packaging, shrink wrapping and distribution jobs. Schenectady ARC consumer for over 15 years Katie Caban, has worked on a variety of jobs for Mohawk since they became a customer and is always happy to work on one their projects "I really like working on the jobs from Mohawk. It is actually one of my favorites." The paycheck Katie earns at Pine Ridge Industries helps her to maintain living in her own apartment as well as pay for hobbies and activities, including shopping and going out to eat with friends.
"It’s great to have a supplier as good as Pine Ridge right in our own backyard," says Laura Shore, Sr. Vice President Communications at Mohawk Fine Papers. "We like to support our neighbors in the Capital District and working with Pine Ridge makes good business sense, too."

Founded in 1795, Union College was the first college chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York. Its name reflects the sense of community felt by members of various groups who were instrumental in its founding. Today, Union has successfully integrated itself into the community. 2007 marks the tenth year that Schenectady ARC has shared a partnership with the college.
Since 1997, Union College has employed 23 adults with disabilities, including four who currently work in dining services. It came as no surprise that their commitment to helping others and supporting the community was recognized by Schenectady ARC when our agency presented the college with the Employer of the Year Award at the Annual Awards Dinner in November. In addition, SARC nominated Union for a NDEAM (National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month) award in October, for which they received statewide recognition for employing individuals with disabilities.
Schenectady ARC consumer Walter Cosgrave, who has worked at the college’s Upper Class Dining Services for more than seven years spoke of the importance of his job, “I need my job so I can support myself, pay my bills and be independent.” He went on to say “I didn’t work for three months, and then ARC helped me get this job, when other agencies would not help. I feel I owe ARC big!” Mr. Cosgrave looks forward to taking the bus to work every day and is very proud of the fact that he is able to earn a paycheck and support himself. He enjoys his job and takes pride in the work he does at Union.
George Ferro, Manager of Upperclassmen Dining Services at Union, spoke highly about the partnership with SARC, “This has been a great experience for the College. ARC sends us people who are really motivated and want to succeed, and we put them right to work. This partnership has been beneficial to everyone involved.”
Union College’s patience, perseverance and commitment have been demonstrated repeatedly over the years. Union employees have encouraged ARC participants to try new positions and have been supportive in every way possible. In addition, Union’s lacrosse team partnered with SARC in April to promote Autism Awareness Month, hosting a complimentary lacrosse clinic for local children.
We salute Union College for its continuous commitment to creating employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and look forward to working with them in the future. If you would like additional information about how to become a partner with Schenectady ARC’s New Direction’s Employment Services program, please contact Jill LaFlamme at 372-1160.
